535d is fine but I'd stick with newer car with warranty. However, the difference is not that big. Go for the 535d or at least try it for few days and see.

stick to the newer 520 - i have owned both, and i have to admit, in the city, the 535d just drinks lots of diesel without returning the additional benefit of having those extra 109 hp.

I dunno how you Europeans do with diesel-powered versions of our cars. I'm sure it has its pros, but clearly you guys bought BMWs for the same reasons we did, not to save money on gas. Or atleast not that much where you sacrifice power.

I would say get the 535d, they did a segment on it a while back on Top Gear and it didn't sound like a diesel at all. Go for it.
I never actually bought my 530d purely for economy, I dont actually do enough miles to warrant that equation, I bought it for Performance as well, these cars have as much torque as the viper, you cant argue with that when the bonus is 40mpg + on run

My only tiny regret is not having the manual for tracks / spririted driving, that soon disappears when stuck in the tyipcal crappy traffic we have in this stupid country.

I originally wanted a 530d after I test drove it. The engine does not sound like diesel at all, infact it sounded like a petrol I6. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the engine at full-throttle.
I'm voting for 535d.

But a 535d with a re-map.... = Checkmate!

OP. 535d all the way. I upgraded from a 525d with 177Bhp, which I think is the same as the 520d now, and have never looked back. The thing is so much fun to drive, and I'm only getting 3mpg less with the 535d. So economy wise there is not that much in it.

I'm sure with that big, powerful diesel engine, you are the biggest littlemouse on the roads over there.
