When I bought my 545i at 100k miles I told myself Id be ok spending about the same amount on maintenance every year. 4 months later I spent,
$500 on AC compressor
$300 for installation of AC compressor
$300 on water pump
$200 on Vacuum pump
$300 on leaking valve cover gaskets
$400 on all new water hoses since they all broke during the water pump replacement
$2200 to have all my "active steering components" Replaced
Total SO FAR = $4,200 within the first 4-5 months.
And that's with me doing most of the work! after replacing all that, new problems still come up today... Water is leaking from the back of the engine now, cant wait to see how much this one will cost! hahaha
So i'd plan to spend a tad more than what your expecting on maintenance. When I test drove my car everything seemed perfect, drove amazing. I also had the check engine light come up during the test drive as well as a few other lights. Dealer said they would fix it and all the ended up doing was disconnecting the battery for about 20 min to reset all the lights. 5 miles later my dash board looked like a Christmas tree.

The carfax doesn't show major services but then again no one in their right mind has BMW do their coolant pipe for 5k+ . I did not smell any coolant smell or gas or oil smell when test driving the car and after WOT it ran good , other than minor jumpiness from tachometer.

I'm not sure exactly what it was... I took that one to the dealer. But i had an error on idrive come up saying something like, active steering error and my power steering didn't work anymore when going through corners... Also, i think it had an effect on the suspension since i started to have horrible body roll. It was a costly nightmare.......... -_-

I bought my 05 545 sport 15 months ago for $13k, and it had 90k miles. Car had lots of records, and the previous owner seemed meticulous. I changed out the suspension, replaced the coils and plugs, and changed the oil. Other than an oil leak at the alternator, and a failed pdc sensor, the car is perfect. Your car is a good deal as long as there is no known issues. Make sure that you are buying from reputable people.
