Actually, with an ECU reflash that turns up the boost in the 535, you can easily get the motor up to over 400 bhp -- a number that you cannot achieve with the regular performance mods to the 550.
My 550, over 12K miles, has averaged 16.3 mpg. At meets, the mpg is about 10-11.

I used to have a 525xi , got a 535xi with all the goodies + individual sound (amazing) ...it's totally different car, 535 feels like you are on a jetfighter, 525 = honda civic haha
It is all about how fast you like to drive. For regular conservative drivers, the 525XI is a fine machine to drive. Again, you need to know how to appreciate the comfort of a car not just the speed.
Is that right mr. performance guys?

You can get alot more out of these suspensions and feel the handling that makes doing the twisties and other courses so fun. Sitting in it is only half the fun.

Where do you live that you need the XI? Personally, I wouldn't do the XI, and this is coming from someone who owned a 2007 530xi Sport, prior to the M. A nice set of winter tires on a standard 535i is all you need for winter.
Plus, the 535i is much more tunable than the XI. Not to mention, you'll just end up asking me questions later on about what will work and what won't work for the XI, so I'll save you the trouble now. Hahahahahahahaha!

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
No doubt the 535 is a more powerful car than the 528, but there are still some of us who are leery when it comes to turbo charged engines. The 535 also has some real overheat issues and it just scares me. If power was all I was after, I would probably look at the 8 cyl. engines before even considering the turbo. Also, I'd like to remind many enthusiasts that there's no need to call the slower E60s a joke. Some of us bought them by choice and don't like to hear that our cars are a "joke." There's not such a thing as a "joke" BMW. They're all great cars. It's like saying that if you prefer to date a model or an actress all the other women (or men) are a joke.

+ 1
My lowly 525i is pretty quick off the line with the Manual Transmission. It has many of the comforts and goodies the faster "better" E60s have. I average about 24mpg...
its a blast to drive....how fast do you wanna go anyway ? Where I live there are stop signs and red lights. I've said it here before the car sure didn't seem underpowered to the cop that gave me the $500 speeding ticket !
