Where do you live that you need the XI? Personally, I wouldn't do the XI, and this is coming from someone who owned a 2007 530xi Sport, prior to the M. A nice set of winter tires on a standard 535i is all you need for winter.
Plus, the 535i is much more tunable than the XI. Not to mention, you'll just end up asking me questions later on about what will work and what won't work for the XI, so I'll save you the trouble now. Hahahahahahahaha!

Oooo. Was that a shot at me?
I have the xi and I've heard the acceleration in the short run (0-60 or 70) is faster than an "i", but later on, due to drivetrain loss, the "i" would be quicker. What ever. I can't complain since my dad bought it for me and he just felt the AWD was going to be useful in the Chicago weather..
Funny story, though. He was pulling into the garage and I guess he gave it a little too much gas. Guess there was a tiny ice patch under some snow and the car turned too sharp and hit the brick separator on the side. Had a dent the size of a frisbee and about as deep as the underside of one, and had the paint scraped off. Just got back from the shop the other day and my dad said that despite paying extra $400 for the metallic repaint on the door panel, they didn't touch it up.
Now he feels guilty for ruining the car while I was away at school he said he'd buy me a new one. Now that made me feel like a spoiled slut, but if he insists I may just go for an E39 M5 or 540i so that I would be able to drive it 800 miles to school and be able to use it there without having to be paranoid about keeping the car in "new" condition. Not that I'd treat it any different, but... you know.
Oh, and go 535 all the way, in case you haven't been convinced enough. 535 vs 528 is a no-brainer, but if you had asked 535 vs 550, then the board would be split since it is a close one. 535 in both.

Good move getting the XI for winter snow. Snow tires are good, but AWD is better and snows with AWD is best. I have driven RWD with snows and AWD with all seasons and AWD wins in my opinion.
that's why i want AWD, due to that experience
i have all season on 330XI, no problem
maybe snow tire on I is good enough, but mentally it is out of questions

Until my son gets behind the wheel, I have a beater front wheel drive commuter and it does quite well in the snow. Someday, my BMW will be my year-round driver so this was an important area to research when I purchased my car. The dealership outsells XI models of all series in Spokane by a large margin.
I do have some experience with the XI and non-XI in the winter. If you have any sort of hills or steep incline on your normal commute, XI is the way to go. I borrowed a friend?s 530i with winter tires and it was fine around town and on freeways on flat, sanded, or plowed roads, but even with new Blizzak tires, I had to leave the car parked at the bottom of the hill with a 1/2 mile trek home. IMO 2-3" of snow on the road is not a reason to purchase an XI... More than 4" on the road, or compact snow and ice that remains un-sanded or unsalted for weeks is a reason to own an XI.
I love my XI... It's not low and tight around curves like the non-XI, but its way more fun to drive than any Asian import that I have owned and I prefer the style combined with winter functionality.
Good luck!

I'm sure the 528 is a wonderful car but I would not have bought one... the sweet power of the 535 is what seduced me.
Our car is a stick shift wagon, so it's an XI.
Our last car was an E39 528 wagon with a 5-speed stick. I thought it was great on 16" Blizzaks in the fluffy white stuff, but the XI is way beyond comparison.
BMW offers a choice because not many drivers in San Diego benefit from AWD, but in the winter I hate walking the last 1100' from my mailbox to my front door, so it's XI for me!

Best of luck. If you must get the XI, the 535 is the one to get.
