No question about it. If you can afford it, definitely go for the 535XI.

Well, I'm just driving a lowly 530xi (2006) but the handling is totally different from the 530i sport...more body lean than I expected...or even than my old 02. Not sure about the 08's, but in the 06 the sport package on the xi is just trim, not suspension. Still a nice car, just depends on your handling priorities I guess...

Just get a set of winter tires. Winter tires make AWD unnecessary for most winter driving. If I need AWD, I probably shouldn't be out driving anyway. I have survived seven winters with a RWD BMW. Not missing X-drive.

Good move getting the XI for winter snow. Snow tires are good, but AWD is better and snows with AWD is best. I have driven RWD with snows and AWD with all seasons and AWD wins in my opinion.

Until my son gets behind the wheel, I have a beater front wheel drive commuter and it does quite well in the snow. Someday, my BMW will be my year-round driver so this was an important area to research when I purchased my car. The dealership outsells XI models of all series in Spokane by a large margin.

I do have some experience with the XI and non-XI in the winter. If you have any sort of hills or steep incline on your normal commute, XI is the way to go. I borrowed a friend?s 530i with winter tires and it was fine around town and on freeways on flat, sanded, or plowed roads, but even with new Blizzak tires, I had to leave the car parked at the bottom of the hill with a 1/2 mile trek home. IMO 2-3" of snow on the road is not a reason to purchase an XI... More than 4" on the road, or compact snow and ice that remains un-sanded or unsalted for weeks is a reason to own an XI.

I love my XI... It's not low and tight around curves like the non-XI, but its way more fun to drive than any Asian import that I have owned and I prefer the style combined with winter functionality.

Good luck!
