I drive in Manual Mode a lot and when I come to a stop I just leave it in 3rd as I come to a stop. Once I have stopped I then downshift to 2nd or 1st. I just wanted to know if this is bad for the transmission. Should I downshift as I am still moving?

Thank you

I think if it was bad for the tranny, it would automatically shift down to 2 via computer, as it does if your in 4,5,6th gear... I just always try to shift into 2nd before comming to a stop to reduce the chances...

Does anyone ever start from a standstill in 2nd or 3rd? I find that if I have people in the car with me, departing in 3rd makes for a smoother ride for them. In 1st or 2nd the car is just so damn eager to go like a bat out of hell, it's not smooth. Of course I love it being like that personally.

I wondered if it's bad for the clutch setting off in 3rd.

btw, my Audi I just sold (2004 A6) did automatically change down to 1st when you stopped. I was quite surprised the first couple of times to find that the BMW didn't do it.

Well if you drive in D then the car will start in 2nd gear not go lower than 2 gear unless you use kickdown. In D/S the car will start from 1st gear. I sometimes also depart in 3 gear because it is very smooth. I was wondering too if it puts more strain on the clutch.

I had a suspicion that this was the case (D=2, D/S=1) but as the display doesn't show the current gear when you're in D or D/S, I was never sure. It's a minor annoyance that after moving into D/S, you have to change gear to find out what gear you're in, and then you're not in D/S anymore, you're in M.

It's a tough tough world JK. Yea I wouldn't mind a little display for what gear your in when in D or D/S but I have gotten very used to the car and can tell what gear I am in most of the time.
