My 525i 6 speed has long shift knob.
Does 550i have entirely differnt shifter (shorter shifter)?
Or is it just the knob that is shorter?

I looked at your link/thread but it seems to be related to the M5/SMG shift boot, not the 6-speed manual shift boot that I am referencing. I read the entire thread and didn't find any link to "Fred's shifter illumination kit" so I'm not sure what that is and how it relates to the 6-speed manual but will search the forums for more info on it. Thanks for the lead.

My Ride: 07 BMW 525i Premium Package, Xenon Lighting Package, manual Transmission. Titanium Grey, 20% Tint around the back, 70% V-Kool on front.
Planned mods: Style 71 wheels with Toyo Proxy 4 tires, Sachs suspension upgrade, upgraded stereo, and many more to come.
Not much help on the illuminated part...
but if you want a shorter shift knob, this is weighted and it's shorter than the standard shifter by ~1".
part no is 25117905310, ~$70 shipped from Garry. pictures are below:

it makes shifting better, not only the shorter knob, but also it's heavier. i think it also contours to the hand nicer (leather) than the stock metal feel, and I think it matches the interior pretty nice (my boot is black unlike the picture above.)
