Default Shift knob replacement at dealer

I went to the dealer and asked for a new automatic shift knob for a 2007 E60. He said I would also have to pay for the install. I know it cant be that difficult and they were trying to charge me $200 for the install.

Does anybody have experience with Shift knob replacement?

I heard you just pull it straight off with a good amount of force but I dont want to break anything.

Replacement of shifter knob is probably one of the easiest things to do on the car. Put the shifter in N or D (only for the convenience) and yank it straight UP. It will come out.

It is not necessary to put the shifter in N or D. However, when the shifter is in Park, the angle at which the shifter is positioned, it makes it little difficult to pull it straight up. So, it makes it convenient to pull up if you move the shifter to N or D.

$200 to replace the shifter knob? :-)

WOW. I just did the Sport button mod on my 550i and this is one of the steps. It is so easy. Pull hard and boink! That is amazing they charge that much.

Is the automatic shifter on the 2007 different than the 2008? On my 2008 it's an electronic shifter that's in the same position no matter what gear you're in. I had it replaced while the car was still under warranty, because it wouldn't go into reverse. The dealer said they had to reprogram it after it was replaced.

2008 had the joystick. That is a different story. Thought here are plenty of threads on retrofits out there to assist. I bet that part is expensive!
