I understand why the sharkfin is needed on the 5er (and 7er, etc.), but it's pretty unattractive. And it just occured to me that there is no sharkfin on the 3 convertible or the 6 coupe and convertible.

Obviously, those cars have all the attennas that our 5ers have in the sharkfin. So where are they located, and why can't they be similarly located in the 5er to eliminate the sharkfin?

I personally like the sharkfin on the car, mainly just because it's different. I saw a older Honda Civic with one the other day and I did a double take. I couldn't help but laugh.

Sure enough, it looks like they're fairly popular on ebay.....Go figure:

The 6er has the aerials built into the rear decklid, which is also the case with the 3er Cabrio. The 3er Cabrio COULDN?T have a sharkfin, same on the 6er Cabrio.

Both have much smaller rear decklids and I believe that they are a different material as well.

Of course, I am just about to have my morning Kaffee so I am not 100% sure but this is my recollection.

Im sure it could be suitably engineered out like on the 6, however BMW like adding these little touches in an attempt to visually differentiate itself from from the competition such as the sharksfin and the angel eyes...etc

I think it would look alot cleaner without it personally

The 3 Series convertible comes standard with a small shark fin on the trunk lid but that's for satellite radio. It is eliminated if you pick the satellite radio pre-wiring delete option.
