Hi!

When i bought my car, at 10 months old I was told it came with the 3yr/36,000 mile service pack. Great I thought! First service was carried out when the car requested it, at around 18,000 miles. Last month the car asked for a brake fluid change at 31,000 miles, I booked it in and was told that it was covered under the service pack. However I was surprised when the dealer told me that the next service, due in 7,000 miles according to the car would not be covered as the car will likely to have done over 36,000 miles, even though this will be well within the three year period. I thought this a little odd as I thought that as long as the car was under three years old and asking for a service it would be covered.

As I did not buy the car brand new I am not sure of the small print on the service pack, but if the service intervals are variable then if your car does not ask for a service till after the 36k limit then you have wasted your money as one service and a brake fluid change is probably cheaper than the cost of the pack!! I was under the impression the packs were good value but perhaps they are not if what you are doing is basically gambling on the fact your car will require a service at the 'right' time.

I am aware that the dealer will only book you in if the service is less than 1000 (or even 500) miles away and the interval warning comes on but presumably by not being driven all that hard (like mine is because it tends to run just on the motorway) the intervals may be longer than 18k and consequently your service pack is useless!!

Is the dealer right? Or am I being taken for a ride? Has anyone else had any issues with this option?

If so I am going to have to drive the thing hard to catch up and qualify for a service!! It now states 6000 miles to a service and I have done 32,000!

Many thanks,

When I bought my car the dealers themselves told me that the Service pack was not good value for money. Its also the only option they cannot discount which makes its worse.
You only get value if you service the car more than 3 times within the 3 years, else its best to simply find a cheap dealer and service it.

The pack will state " 36,000 / 3 years _whichever comes first_ ".

I nearly bought one, when I was still thinking that cars need to be serviced every year or 12,000 miles. But current car is 18 months old, 15,000 miles, and it still says it has 4000 miles before the first service - by which time it will have been sold!
