My car's service light came on today and found it's needing a brake fluid flush. Is this something I want to do or should I take it in?

BMW recommends the brake fluid flush every two years. Presumably, the brake fluid can absorb water and dirt, thus the recommendation to flush. You should be able to look up DIY instructions, but I think it requires some specific equipment. Personally, I leave brake jobs to the pro's.

 

BMW Dealers frequently have on-line service specials ... shop those - even consider bringing a competitor's coupons to your preferred dealer. Recently my BMW dealer had a brake flush special for $79. Alternatively, get to know and use a BMW trained Indy.

 

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I don't mind spending the money and having the professionals do what they do best. But I enjoy learning and working on my own cars if possible.

Bleeding brakes is a two person job unless you have a brake bleeder tool. The process is straight forward, but working on something like brakes is something I'd recommed someone with experience show you instead of watching a DIY video.

If you screw things up there's a chance you won't find out until you step on the brakes and your car doesn't stop......


Not sure what an indy would charge - but the BMW dealer that does my service charges $199 before I get a 10% BMWCCA discount. They do have specials from time to time.

 

It isn't that hard to do. If you have done even minor car work, this is doable.

It is a one person job and very easy. If you have a manual transmission, it is a bit more difficult.
