Ok,

So currently I have about 579 miles on my 550i. Isn't the service interval supposed to start counting down? When I start the car, it STILL shows 15000 miles with a date in 2007? Shouldn't it be now 14421 miles by now??

I have ~3300 and it shows 13000 left...so I think it maybe every 1000 or 2000 miles.

You haven't done enough miles or driven it hard enough yet.

The smallest interval it counts by is every hundred miles.
(but maybe it'll do tens and single digits when you're close to the targeted service?)

Under 1000 miles, service indicator will count down by 100miles.
Other than that, it'll count down by 1000 miles. Hope it helps.

The service interval has a brain of its own. Seriously, drive it hard and you'll see the count down much faster for oil, brakes, etc.

Agreed, mine has actually gone back up after a trip to Geneva at the weekend with a steady 200kmph crusie for 1000km.

So, your car is not even close be braken in... Have you been driving easy?

The iDrive, if you check it, can show absurbe values for a while, but soon it will
also adapt and show the real measures.

I have had some funny brake pad milages whilst my E60's been new.

The service interval is up to you...

Mine has 3500 miles and the indicator shows 14000 miles left. Not sure how this thing works.

Its determined by your driving style, and it changes dynamically. If you drive hard, then it'll want you to do service sooner. If you take it easy, it won't want service for many more miles.

15k miles is only a general rule of thumb, not the actual mileage you should be getting service at.
