Thumbs up

Today my "Service Engine Soon" indicator light came on and stayed on. I checked the items under "service" in I-drive, and everything seems to show "ok". Also, when holding the check button down on the turn signal switch, it came back with "all systems are ok". I do not seem to have any other issues going on with the car except maybe a very slight rough idle at initial start. Any suggestions as to what iit might be?

I just purchased this car from a BMW dealer three weeks ago. It's a 2006 550i sport with 18,007 miles on it as of today. The only thing I have done is changed to a K&N drop in air filter.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Had the same problem once with mine and it cleared up by itself. I did call the dealer about it and he said the emission control system will sometimes cause that. Since all other checks are not indicationg a problem I'd just give them a call to be sure and see what they say before driving it in. The rough idle at start is another common problem and you ought to ensure you have the latest progman loaded. The rough idle may be caused by a bad post-start mixture setting which screws up the emissions sensors temporarily which gives you the false service light, etc.

Thanks for the insight!

Is there any concern that the change to a K&N air filter may be causing the issue?

By the way, how long does it take before "newbie" is removed from your signature?

Could be your filter... did you check your gas cap?

Newbie will stay for a few hundred posts...

I experienced similiar problems as you. The only difference was I took out the charcoal filter and my car died 2 times afterwards. Needless to say, I popped the filter back in and it hasn't died since. I don't think the K&N filter is the culprit, but who knows???

I took it to the dealer yyesterday, and it apears to be an O2 sensor issue. They reset the alert, and they ordered a new O2 sensor to be installed next Thursday. So far the alert has not come back on.

Thanks again for the help on this one!

That's no problem.

From the iDrive you can see what part needs serving.

In your case it seems to be the mircofilter, I had mine changed at 18,000 km's / almost 2 years.

I did also change the brake fluids a bit in advance (every second year needed),
because I dont't want to have the car in service all the time.

Mine also popped on last night with the HUD message of 'increased emmissions?"

Any ideas on the cause or solution?

TIA
