Service check?

Hi,
Today my car says it would like a service!
The date says 2/2005 and the service counter says 12.000 km left ?? What is that supose to mean ??
The car was in for it's 30.000 km service in september 2004, and the service interval on this car should be 2 years OR 30.000 km, or am I wrong ??
