This month I am introducing another change to the format for the sales reports. I have changed the percentage change figures so that a negative change shows up in red rather than with a negative sign. I think that this change allows you to see a negative trend more easily. Please let me know if you like this change.

BMW Group sales this September reached 24,684 vehicles, up 31.1% when compared to the 18,828 sold this month last year. Total BMW Group sales of 216,917 units for the first 9 months of the year were up 6.2% when compared to the 204,183 units sold in the first 9 months of 2003.

For comparison, Mercedes-Benz had August sales of 17,445 units this month, up 1.2% from the total of 17,234 sold last September. YTD sales for M-B were 157,559 which was a decrease of 1.2% from the total of 159,447 units sold during the first 9 months of 2003.

Please note that I am reporting only United States sales data.

Looks great Fred. The only comment I'll make is that unless you read the notes, it's not obvious that the red numbers are negatives.

You might want to try the approach accountants use. Put the negatives in red and in parenthesis.

Either way, thanks for your contributions!

Thank you Fred once again for the insightful data. It seems that E60 sales were actually better than 2003 numbers up to May 2004. A few bad months but some recovery in Sept. Hopefully my car will finally arrive this month.

Okay, I couldn't resist peeking in at RF to see the reaction over there to a month with positive numbers.

You have to see it for yourself if you're in the mood for a chuckle!

Hey Fred,

I suggest keeping the negative sign along with making the numbers red. Many changes for the better over the past month -- great work.

I tend to disagree that the E60 has had any bad months. BMWs OVERALL US sales continue to grow. The introduction of the X3 has cannibalized some sales of the 5, but SUVs are part of the American culture. There are many 3 series and 5 series buyers that will opt for the X3 instead now that it is available. Bottomline is that the Sept sales figuires show that everyone can rest assured that our resale values are protected.
