Taking delivery next week of a 535D Sport. Dealer says I don't need tracker or RAC trackstar+ because the e60 cannot be stolen without the keys. Are these worth the ?500 fee?

They're talking rubbish about 'it can't be stolen' - someone will find a way to steal it even if it means lifting it onto a transporter if they really wanted to. I've had various cars fitted with Tracker but have more recently decided that it's not worth it. The two key benefits are a reduction in insurance premiums and the chance of getting your car back if it is stolen. The drawbacks are that you may not match the installation / annual costs in insurance savings and you may well not want your car back if some pikey has nicked it. I much prefer new for old insurance. Some people have doubts about the reliability of these systems also.

I decided against a tracker for three reaons:

1. reports seems to indicate they don't in any way shape or form guarantee your car will be recovered (seems police availability dependent)

2. cost

3. if some git nicks the car i'd rather have a new one

i went for GAP insurance instead.

I agree

Me too - Shortfall insurance - if the car is total loss (accident or theft) shortfall between insurance payout and original invoice price is covered = New car, thank you very much!
