Secondary Air System Malfunction - 2005 545i
#1
In the last year, I have had quite a few sensor warnings for my 05 545. About 90% of them are false and I am able to clear the warning light. But, yesterday I got a "Check Engine" light. Took car into my mechanic this morning. When he did a diagnostic, the scanner showed malfunction of the secondary air system. This system consists of an electric air pump that is triggered to pump extraa air into the intake system during a cold start. The pump comes on during the start and then cycles off after some short period.
There is the air pump, relays, and a system of hoses that comprise the secondary system. My question is to get opinions on what the common causes are for such a malfunction and what can I look forward to in the name of costs. In particular, assuming worst case, what would be the cost of he air pump and the relay that controls it?
Thanks in advance.

Often the cause is a cracked hose between the pump and the valves. The part itself can be bought for less than $60 but if you are going to have a dealer or independent shop do it it can run into big bucks because the intake manifold has to be removed to get to it. See the following link describing the diagnoses: https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/d...es+2004+-+2005
