So I got back into my car while on a road trip in Minneappolis it was freezing so I immediately turned on my heated seat about 3 miles later I smell burning leather and smoke is coming from my seat. My car tried to kill me!

Anyone ever have this happen? I'm sure I'm not the first!

Which E60 models and which years are affected? Of course what they say is affected may not actually be true, just like with passenger airbag sensor recall.

This happened to my '04 and the dealer replaced the leather.. I also moaned and haggled enough that they replaced both the seat cushion and the seat back (the burned area was on the left "wing" of the sport seat back.) They will try and only replace the leather seat cover of the affected area. They will replace the entire portion (no patching or anything), but then you are left with either a new seat back cover and worn bottom cover or vice versa

They honored the recall just last november (when I got the car). I gues the previous owner either never used the seat heater or I got it just in time for it to burn up...
Thanks again guys I printed out the appropriate comments from this page along with the recall information and took it with me to the dealership and its looking like there going to replace everything. What's weird is the previous owner did have it fixed however it has the same symptoms as the previous faulty seat heater!

I saw somewhere that the recall was issued in 2004. I am gonna assume that this issue was fixed by the time my 9/2007 535i was built. I hope so, because I use my heated seats a LOT. This is the first car I've had with heated seats, and I hope I never have to have another one without them...at least if the seats are leather...which I hope I never have to have another without those either.

Known issue and was a BMW recall. Take it to the dealer and it should be replaced no charge.
+1. For some of the '04's. Mine did get fixed.

Some may have bought a second hand car from someone
who didn't read the e60.net, nor did not get the factory call?

This happed to my fiance in her last car while she was on the free way. It burnt through her wool pea coat and wool skirt. She jumped up off her seat and rear ended someone. So of course my e60 has every option but cold weather package.
Dude, are we still talking about the seat or a porno movie?

I've had both seats replaced due to broken heating elements (rear outside edge of the bases). I checked with BMW UK, but there was no recall in the UK for some reason. You'd think the parts were the same World-wide?

This is my first car with heated seats. I am a bit puzzled as to how what must be very old technology (heated seats have been around for tens of years haven't they?) keeps going wrong?!?!

Car is at the dealer for the passenger restraint sensor mat recall. Told them about the seat warmers burning the leather, and they deny that there is any sort of recall. They said to replace the lower part of the seat (leather and seat warmer), would cost around $1500. They said they could talk to BMW NA but it would probably still be $100-$200 deductible. What the hell??? What's BMW-NA # again???

They said the same thing to me.

Print out the recall information and the example of me and the other guy who had this fixed within this thread and tell them other ppl are getting it fixed for free!
