Surely the system uses the memory from the key that was used to unlock the car - given you can choose if the seats move on unlocking or opening the door...

This is what a BMW document says:
The personalisation number is vehicle to call up the Key Memory settings in the vehicle. On unlocking with the remote control, the remote control transmits the personalisation number to the CAS. The CAS forwards the number across the data buses to the other control units. On receipt of the personalisation number, the individual control units implement the settings set in the Key Memory.

Then i came home and it remembered the settting i put in earlier in the day. Then when i found my regualar key all my old settings werer there. I think it has memeory for atlest 3 keys.

The manual states that you can have 4 keys. You get two with the car and you can order 2 more from BMW that can store settings in memory. You can have 4 different settings for 4 different drivers with 4 different keys. The way I understand it, each key holds just preferences for 1 person.

A max total of 4 keys, that's correct.
Each key remembers its seat memory positions - two on each seat.
That is 4 seat positions (two on each seat) per key, four keys total times four, 16 seat memory settings in total.
