Just in case this happens before the dealer visit, If the car does die all of a sudden like that. Will the steering work and are the brakes usable?
The brakes will loose boost and become hard as a rock, requiring a lot force just to slow the car down (very frightening)....as for steering, full power/pwr assisted steering become very hard to turn, I don't what else is added to the nightmare when active steering cars loose power.

shittttt this really sucks, Ghostteck is this possibly the issue. Alternator going bad? Are these the symptoms. Id rather tell the dealer to check the alternator then have them go through my car.

Also does anyone else need to crank before starting up. My dads 530xi starts up without any hesitation, my 550i takes a bit longer and cranks to start. Is this an alternator issue.

BTW: My dad was a Mercedes guy, after he drove my 550i, he bought a 530xi a yr later

On a different car many years ago I had loose wiring on a fuel pump that only showed itself when going over railway lines...kinda freaky when you think about it. It would just stop on railway lines when it hit the bump. Electrical power to the rest of the car was fine so I could turn the engine over and the lights were on. Just wouldn't restart until the pump wiring decided to make a connection again. Just required crimping one connection.

Hope your fix is just as simple!
