I have the option in investing in an upgrade to 08-1 DVD. How can I find out what I will get as 'new' item in this upgrade or can someone provide me a list. Welcome any feed on this.

You'll get a more up to date database of streets/motorways etc. Any roads that have been newly created, renamed, rerouted, widened etc. It'll all be in there. I don't believe you get any new "features" - I think that's part of the iDrive software update which is a completely different thing. I got the software update and it brought new life to my navi. I got the icons on the left, a more detailed popup menu, the perspective (birds-eye) view. I still have the old navi DVD though, so I don't get up to date road information.

We all have that option - of going to our BMW dealer and asking for the latest navi DVDs. I bet they're not cheap though.
If you part exchange you old nav dvd then the new one is ?100 from BMW.

You can run copies of the disc but I have found that they arent 100% reliable so went back to the original disc.

The unreliability could be just because of the burner you used. I know that if I burn an MP3 CD from my laptop, the tracks skip too often, but if I burn it from my old desktop machine they hardly ever skip. You could try burning at x1 speed (instead of a faster speed).

I know the burner makes a difference but have tried the discs on three different burners at the lowest speeds. Unable to find a program that will allow me to burn the discs at 1x though, 2 or 4 is the lowest option i ever get. Have tried different media too including Taiyo Yuden, TDK and Verbatim -R discs.

They all start off ok and about 100 miles into a journey with nav on I get an error about disc reading.

the disc quality and the burn speed isw crucial with these discs, the slowest speed your burner is capable of is the best way to do it

I upgraded from 2005 to 2009, I could not see much difference in Tristate area (NY,CT & NJ) but saw lots of additional roads in VA area

+1
It all depends upon your area. From 2005 to 2009, I have not seen any difference here in the San Fransisco Bay Area.
