That's why it took my post to inspire someone who had already posted in this thread to eventually reply to the OP's question.

Thanks for the link. This is exactly why I would never buy a dealer demo with 1500 miles on it to save a couple thousand dollars. Everybody that test drives the thing has beat on it, BEFORE it was even broken in.

Just work the engine up to working temperature... and flor it with the technology in today's engines (specially BMW) the break in procedure is not relevant anymore... Of cause within limits.. BMW is just afraid that new costumers will beat the hell out of the new car and claime some warranty afterwards... talked to my dealer about it and he has been a dealer since 1979 so I think he is the right man to ask.
Bottom line is that it's a personal choice. My advice is to go ahead and break it in since it can't do any harm and might provide a benefit down the road. (It's not too difficult to take it easy for a few thousand miles...) That said, not breaking it in gently might not make a difference unless you plan to keep the car for a long time. People that lease for a few years will likely not see any problems (but maybe the next owners will.)
For me, I choose to break in my leased cars properly out of respect for the car and for the successive owners...

My '05 545 had the active steering, and after living with it I strongly feel that particular technology is botched. You wouldn't think so if you were coming out of a Mercedes, Lexus or Audi, but once you are used to the wonderful "feel" of a bimmer, the active setup feels numb, vague, lifeless.
Also, unlike what many magazine reviewers said, I adjusted to it very fast and I can usually easily predict how it reacts at any speed.
Anyway, enough about AS.
I want to ask a question. Do you feel an improvement in the 550i transmission over the 545i? I don?t like my 545?s first gear ratio. It makes it hard to drive in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic. I am curious to know if they improved by now?
