Same engine in 523i and 525i?

Yes prices are crazy here. For the price of one 523i in Singapore you could buy TWO 545is in the US. Gas is US$4/gallon and road tax is based on engine capacity. A 545i would cost US$3500/yr tax. Insurance is correspondingly high.

The "standard" specs for cars is decided by the distributor. To order a custom spec car would take 3 months for delivery and you end up paying a higher price because it is "non-standard"! Fortunately the 523i comes with xenons but not adaptive. Didn't want or need the other "goodies" on the 525i though.

Yeah i know.. i've lived in Singapore for almost 10 years before coming to US for studies.

Hmm.. since you don't need any other options for the 'standard' 525i, why not go for it? Otherwise, have you considered the new E90 330i? I'm not sure if the interior space would meet your needs but after all it's an excellent car in terms of performance and comfort.

Off topic: Despite of the high car pricing in Singapore, they are flooded with E60s everywhere... people is getting richer nowadays...

You can't just change the ECU. The intake manifold is three stage in the 525i and only one stage in the 523i. The sensors on the fuel injection system are much more complicated on the 525i than on the 523i. Even the limiter on the 525i is at 7000 compared to 6500 on the 523i (ok you can neglect that ). The difference is not only software, the hardware is also different.

Hi Shebs,

That is basically what I have heard but that does not explain the same BMW part numbers (for 523i and 525i) for intake manifold, cams, injectors, etc. Not only that, the complete engine for both cars have the same part number as well!

Well , that is pretty interesting. So you are saying that BMW is just ploughing? That there is no differences but software? I do believe you on the part number issue, but I did not check it. May be you ae right. I do not trust BMW anyways.

I'll tell you something. Why don't you check the differences between an American 525i and 530i? They are basically the same idea. Both have a 3 liter engine, one has 3 stage intake manifold and the other has 1 stage.

Hey kopi,

check out Dinan's website, new for the e60 is the cold air intake - I spoke to dinan and although there is no dyno chart on it yet - they're claiming a 20 hp gain!!!

I'm just not sure if this is compatible with the 2.5??? Will keep you posted

The BMW distributor in Singapore claims that this will not work. But then again they would say that as they charge US$20,000+ extra for the 525i! (You do get options like GPS, Active Steer and Adaptive lights as standard equipment though)
I have just changed my E60 520i with the latest E61 525i. The ride difference is considerable and 48 bhp, compared to the 520i or 41 bhp more compared to the 523i are definitely making the difference. Do not have doubts and go for the 525i you won't regret the choice.

Thanks for the info. The cold air intake will be of interest to many E60 owners in Singapore. I will check their website for more information (if they have updatedit).
