My car was built in 3/04 and although I haven't crashed it, I don't feel unsafe in it. Crash testing, although important, doesn't always yield results that are "real world" and car manufacturers will sometimes adjust or modify the car simply to score higher on the tests.

I have faith that BMW (and M-B, etc.) does enough crash testing on thier own make their cars among the safest on the road. If the 2004 models were unsafe, there'd be a lot more press about it.

The car scored well on the IIHS test:

Ultimately, it's your decision but if the only reason you're trying to get out of buying the 2004 is due to safety, I think you might be overreacting...

Sorry Buddy, but when BMW go and change the entire airbag system, crumple zones, Braking system, put in a lot more re-inforcement in the drivers and pasengers footwell, then you know you have serious issues. BMW dont re-engineer the safety of one of their cars 12 months after they realease a new model for the good of their health. They did this because of the negative press they were getting and the fact that their customers were running to MB and Lexus. I would not buy a 04 E60 when it scored so low in the Euro NCAPS.

Thats a little childish don't you think? The point I am trying to make is well documentated, BMW submitted the E60 for NCAP Testing in May 2004. NCAP were awarding the car an unnaceptable score as far as BMW were converned. BMW told them thay would resubmit the car for testing later that year, which was accepted.

How could BMW let their E60 have a 3 star rating and MB have a 5 star rating? That would be economic suicide. However yes cars manufactured from Sept 2003 until the end of 2004 are less safe in an impact than the 2005 to present day E60's (According to NCAP).

I have bought all of my BMWs to avoid accidents, not get in them - so far that strategy has worked well. It is nice to know BMW is always trying to improve their safety.
