There were changes made after the car got initial poor ratings in the NCAP (European) saftey tests. The changes were described as follows:

"It achieved a four-star rating after Euro NCAP allowed frontal, side and pole retests following improvements to the car?s steering column, footrest, door trim, door latch, airbags and software."

BMWNA would not releaase the information (at least not to me), but here is a sumary of what was reported. The links are old - but i think they still work.

More specifically, the English magazine Autocar reported that when the EuroNCAP originally tested the E60, it would have received only 3 stars. Here is a link to the original article. http://www.autocarmagazine.co.uk/news_arti...sp?na_id=210953
Autocar subsequently reported that the E60 "required numerous modifications and a re-test to record a four star result." In the same article, Autocar reported that "the modifications only affect cars built after the autumn 2004 test so any built between the September 2003 launch and this summer would probably only score three stars." Here is a link to the second Autocar article. http://www.autocarmagazine.co.uk/News_Arti...sp?NA_ID=212475

It got a serious overhaul in sept 04 that seemily made a radical difference with the pre sept cars only gaining 3.4 stars and the post sept 04 cars getting 4.6 stars

I am being bullied to buy this car now by this dealer, who refuses to accept that there was any safety issue with older 525i. I am stuck with him on this point, but he says I can't back off now. It was built 3/04.

My car was built in 3/04 and although I haven't crashed it, I don't feel unsafe in it. Crash testing, although important, doesn't always yield results that are "real world" and car manufacturers will sometimes adjust or modify the car simply to score higher on the tests.

I have faith that BMW (and M-B, etc.) does enough crash testing on thier own make their cars among the safest on the road. If the 2004 models were unsafe, there'd be a lot more press about it.

The car scored well on the IIHS test:

Ultimately, it's your decision but if the only reason you're trying to get out of buying the 2004 is due to safety, I think you might be overreacting...

I got my car changed for this reason.

Had a half year long fight with BMW...
