The front brake calipers on my 550i are badly rusted. Since there is so much space in the rim it's really noticable and bugs the hell out of me. I contacted BMW about possibly painting them but they declined and said that this once they would replace them for me. My only issue is that if they do that, they are probably just going to rust up again. I remember reading a post a while ago where someone's dealer actually painted their calipers but I cannot find it. has anyone had similar difficulties??
Thanks,
Jeff

Yes, I have the same issue. Not unusual though and I believe painting is the only way to stop the rusting from continuing.

Had the same prblem on my 330ci.What i did was paint them with silver paint. Any good grade of SILVER paint will withstand the temperature that is given from braking.Wire brush the calipers as good as you can, blow of the dust and put on two coats of paint, the paint is ony a few bucks for a 1/2 of pint at Home Depot or Lowes, try to be as careful as you can not to get paint on the disk. Mine still looked good when I traded the 330ci for the 530i. Good luck
cheers

while you are thinking of a proper solution, i'd take up bmw's offer of replacing them for now. at least you get new ones.

I'm a little confused about your rusty calipers. The calipers on the e60 are aluminum. On the 550 or at least on my 545 the rotors have an aluminum hat (part that is connected to the hub) and only the disk is steel. Do you have picture?

There is special Brake Caliper paint that will withstand high temperatures. There is a spray on paint that you can find the name if you search this form - I think the manufacturer was called VPN. The brake shop I go to also suggested a brush on epoxy caliper paint that he thought was better.

The spray on stuff I put on has held up well. I opted for Black and put on the BMW letters.

I did it when I had my brakes changed. I had the shop pull off my calipers and did it in the evening and then took them back in the morning. The calipers are pretty messy from the brake dust. Brake parts cleaner and a wire brush works pretty good.

The hubs trend to rust a bit as the discs.

The discs rust at once after a wash with solvants
but will get clear after the first brake.

The hubs can be cleaned and painted.

Be sure not to spary anything on the brake pads!

Use Search, the matter has been discussed a lot...

Rusty Brake Calipers. What To Do??-bmw_550_caliper_1.jpgRusty Brake Calipers. What To Do??-bmw_550_caliper_2.jpgI've done this on my last dozen + cars- can't stand the sight of corroded bare metal. I did not remove the calipers this time. I've done that before (including grinding the casting marks and sandblasting) but the brand new 550 didn't need that. I cleaned them with brake cleaner and then removed the clips and masked the exposed parts of the pads. I used a very small stiff paint brush (3/8 inch) and went slowly. You can cover the entire caliper including the back side thsi way. Frankly I don't think masking is even needed if you have a steady hand.

While I was there I also polished the rotor hubs as they are beautiful aluminum with rivets on the 550 and clearcoated that with an engine paint to keep them looking fresh. The clips were painted aluminum color (from Eastwood) and then clear coated. They look great in contrast against the black pads (with factory lettering) and the blue caliper castings, a nice detail.

The kit I used was bought ($15) at our local version of chain auto supply (called PepBoys) and is made by DupliColor, claimed to be ceramic polymer caliper paint or some such hype. It's very thick and sets up quickly and looks very hard and shiny. I did my 528is 3 years ago and they still look new. DupliColor cleverly calls the color "BLUE" and it's is a decent match but it is a bit darker than the roundel.

Well worth it for other nuts like me who hate to see thru a wheel into corrosion, but not so bold as red or gold. I've done silver too and it also looks great but my Mystic Blue seemed to call for matching calipers.

(Copied from my May post - they still look awesome of course...) HAVE FUN!
