My Ride: 2011 520dA coming up.
3600 rpm = 150Mph! in 6th with the diesel so you'd be running out of scale when you even could do 4000rpm
Keep it running at different rpm as much as possible by simply using the manual option of the gearbox.
Let's say you have to drive 130-140km/h then simply shift back and forth between 5th and 6th gear every few kilometers. Otherwise try varying your speed.
Good luck and enjoy!

[/quote]Hmm.........Does not sound like a definitive technical explanation to me.
I've been told not to go much over 4,000 revs for the first 1200 miles.
I'm actually quite enjoying it..........trying to see if I can creep above my personal best of 32mpg. I've not had a motorway run yet though.

Don't baby it too much.
Don't be afraid to touch 4k rpm within the first 1000 miles on ocassion.
3/4th of throttle is like almost full throttle anyway, the only thing kickdown does is pulling it completely to redline.
Good luck and safe driving!

Does this sound technical enough?

My Ride: 535D Sport Auto
With my last 530d I just avoided the kick down click. Same with the 535d.
You won't need to go above 3,500 rpm to have some fun. Its all about low revs in the diesel's.

I was told at the Euro Delivery not to pass the 3500rpm mark for about 2000Kms and of course "AVOID KICK DOWNS ". The funny part was that the dude never told me about a speed limit, so I took mine to 220Km/h for about 2 hours (coming from Munich to Berlin). I broke her in the first week and all seems well. Just waiting for the fuel consumption to improve though.
