RPM constantly swings between 4-500 for 2005 545i
#1
Hi guys,
I noticed that when the engine is warmed up, the RPM is idling between 4 to 500. What I mean is that it constantly swings between 4 to 500, unlike all my other V6 bMW which the RPM does not swing.
Does anyone with 545 knows if this is normal or not?
Thanks,

I also drive a 2005 545i and the engine when cold, does exactly the same thing. Not sure if it's a problem, but it does appear to be common!

But mine does it when the engine is warmed up. So basically mine idling swings between 4-500 rpm at all time, does yours swings when it is warmed up?

Well now that I think of it, sometimes when I stop at a signal, it will do it, but in all cases it quickly goes back to "Normal". Either way, I don't think anything is wrong with the car, its just a bit eccentric!

I dont think that's something to be worried about. Now if it was fluctuating between say 500-1000 RPM then maybe there is a problem. Otherwise, it sounds normal to me.

I have a friend working for BMW. I used to have the same issue. I was told to take it to the high speed (over 120mph) drive for a couple of minutes. So I did. Now the problem is gone. It is very strange but the problem is gone for now. My guess is that there was extremely large amount of fuel going through injectors, but I am not sure.
