My Ride: 2005 545i, Titanium Silver, Auto, Sport Package, NAV, Active Steering
I've had this car for 3 years with almost 69k miles on it. Early this year, I noticed that at certain speeds the transmission hesitates when shifting to upper gears (mainly between 5th and 6th gear). The problem seems to be getting worse and the shift from 5th to 6th gear isn't smooth at all. I drove it in manual mode for a while this past weekend and when in 5th gear I got the sensation that the transmission was attempting to shift gears. The dealer looked into it during a recent oil change and did not find any issues. Anyone having similar issues?
Thanks...
Thanks...

I have the same issues with my 2004 545i (March production) with only 51k miles. My bmw shop did a diagnostic test and did not find anything wrong but still charged me $60. It's driving me crazy! Mine happens more around the 30-40 mph range but doesn't do it in manual mode.

This is the dreaded 545i slam/ surge, google it. There is a lot of info out there. The best solution thus far has been replacing the mechatronics unit. $4,500 if no warranty. I am battaling BMW right now. Mine is not bad (40,000 miles) but I know it's not going to get any better. Another forum has a thread that has 17,000 views and 150 replies. BMWNA needs to step up and make this right. If mine doesn't get fixed under CPO, I will be putting together a class action suit.

Since you both drive 06 and under cars with no push start this is what you do with a key and I hope it helps:
1) Put your key into the ignition
2) Put the car in the ON position
3) Put your foot on the gas pedal to the 'kickdown' click and hold it
4) Count to 25
5) Release and start the vehicle.
You've now reset your auto transmission's "learned" feature and set it back to factory default. You should notice a difference. Do this every 1000 miles or so since your transmission saves your driving habits and shift patterns up to 1000 miles and then stops "learning" to be bad. I hate the feature, personally.

^^^ This help for a little bit, but these cars have a design flaw that destroys the original mechatronics unit. As i said before on the "festive bimmer" site there are dozens of 545 owners with this problem. The real fix is getting the mechatronics replaced.
