02/04 545i.

Late winter I started noticing the engine run rough at the stops. Sometimes it felt it was about to stall. I went to the dealer, they ran the gasoline test, which came at 15% ethanol content, charged me $137 and recommended to use only Shell's V-Power. 3 tanks of Shell's gasoline later the problem was still there. I came back with the same complaint. New test showed 5%. The engine was examined with an "endoscope", and some scratches were found on the 4th cylinder. Two days later I got a phone call that I was going to be getting a new engine.

I would like a few knowledgeable opinions: what could have led to this? I have used nothing but premium gas at all times. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to get a new engine...

Also, I am having transmission kicking issues at 1500 revs, usually in 6th gear at 40 mph. Is my transmission next?

Neither kicking nor rough running are present at high speeds There are times we all need to slow down though... and I don't want to get "punished" for driving slow

Thank you

I'm no expert, but I doubt the fuel would score the cylinder wall. Sounds like you have a bad piston ring that caused the issue. A bad ring would result in poor compression = rough idle. They'll fix it.

40mph in 6th gear?! It's probably just the engine labouring. Change down a couple of gears.

I as well have a 04 545i production data 10/03 and am taking my car in for rough idle a second time. I use only BP Amoco Ultimate in my car. Last time I brought it in they simply replaced the battery as the voltage was not up to par. It seems that this is a common issue amongst E60 04 545i.

I have a rough idle as well. 04 545i , did battery actually improve idle? Really curious on the response.

For the scratches on #4. where there any signs that something was rubbing such as knocking noise from engine at anytime??

Got my car back today. New engine. Big difference... $50 total bill. I guess my M5 is gonna have to wait for quite a while now.

I will let the engine break in for the first 1000 miles, then unleash...

Thanks to everybody who responded. Rough idle was a confirmed for 04 545s. The tech told me. Repairs are customer complaint driven though, so if you do not notice problems with your car they won't volunteer fixing.

No knocking, no rubbing. You might want to request the dealer examine the engine using the "endoscope" and check compression.
