Default Right tail lamp malfunction

iDrive says "right tail lamp malfunction" all lights in the module are working. Some were looking a little black so I replace every light in the assembly and I am still getting the same message. I took the left lamp assembly and switched it with the right assembly to see if the problem would follow and it did NOT. With the left assembly connect on the right side it still said "right tail lamp malfunction". I am at a loss as to where to look next. Any suggestions would be great. I am limited in skill but can try the simple. 2007 BMW 525xi

My 07 525i says the same thing occasionally.

One of my backup lights wet out, so I replace it with a cheap and brighter LED one. Apparently BMWs don't always recognize them as working lights.

Do you have OEM?

I had this same issue when I installed LED bumper lights. I took it to the Dealer and they said something went bad. I will have to find the print out and I will let you know what they changed to get it back working.

Couple of things...

tmoseley...you may also have the failing taillight assembly. There is a recall on that item. There are many threads on this. Here is one: 2007 530xi "right tail lamp malfunction" answer - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

seanjordan20...replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs is a problem. The incandescent bulbs are tested by the car electronics briefly to see if they are burned out. The problem is that the LED bulbs don't react the same electronically and the car says there is a problem. That's the reason for the resistors being supplied with LED lighting upgrades. The resistor makes the circuit behave like the incandescent bulb does when the car tests the lighting circuit.

I have no idea what you are talking about. No one said anything about replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. When I responded I was responding to the OP no one else. But it seems you have answered his problem because that is what was replaced on my car at the dealer.

the lci taillights have a recall on them, unplug and check the connector to see if it's burnt. The dealer will replace free of charge.

I did see those posts and I checked the assembly. Everything look good. I also tested the assembly by hooking the right side to the left and the left to the right. I felt that if the assembly was bad then my message should then say left tail lamp malfunction. This did not happen. It still says right tail lamp malfunction. So I do not believe that the problem is in the bulbs or assembly. I even checked the connector and it all looks good.
