I had a quick look at the test report in Dominic's office yesterday. I only read the concluding paragraph but I find it hard to understand how the X5 won. They seemed to be saying that it was a competent all rounder which is not exactly a ringing endorsement of a performance range topping model. I seldom trust the rubbish printed in Autocar. They slated the 5 at launch for woeful styling then 12 months later it has become the clear class leader in their eyes and they like the styling. I've even written a couple of letters to them highlighting their journalistic shortcomings and both were printed with one becoming letter of the week. As our American friends would say... go figure?
As far as the two cars go I have to say that I much prefer the styling of the RR Sport. It looks fresh, modern and purposeful. I really liked the X5 when I had one few years ago but I think the styling isn't ageing well against the rest of the totally revamped BMW range. I am reserving judgement until I've driven the 4.8iS and until I've seen the new Sport Exlcusive edtion model in Stratus grey.

Waiting to get a 535d Sport with individual and all the extras...
Had a ride in my mates RR (non sport) and i have to say I would have picked that over an X5 anyday. The current X5 interior is too e39 for my taste, and the shape is played out. Get the sport RR and some green wellies with Viper stripes

I'm still undecided on which way to go. The 4.8iS in Exclusive edition guise is just too much money when I spec it the way I want it. Even with a reasonable discount it is ?65k. If I go for this car I'll take it in standard spec with a couple of extras. The 4.2 Supercharged Range Rover Sport is ?58,800 with the same goodies on it and no discount. The Cayenne S is ?57k with the same spec and no discount.
If I decide not to go with a 4x4 (tax bill is ferocious) and go with another E60 I'm definately going to go for a 535d sport with BMW Individual on both interior and exterior. I was looking at colour swatches in the dealer today and my current favourite colours are either Clearwater (X3 colour and the closest colour to the M5's Silverstone blue) with polar grey interior or Le Mans blue with Champagne/Platinium interior. The discount I can get on the 535d more than covers the cost of the Individual paint and leather as well as the 19" style 172 alloys. Decisions..decisions!

The only reason I didn't go for individual paint was Carbon black - bastyards
Imho the RR is the best of the lot Looks wise and interior wise (unless you go to town on the porsche options list but if the cayennes options are anything like the 911s then it will be easy to blow 25k on optional bits )and the performance is marginally less important in a tank.
Out of the swatches for individual leather polar grey was the best - caramel is nice but I can imagine being sick after a while
