Hi guys. Loving SMG, but have question: When you guys downshift do you hear a revving? Seems to occur intermittently and is relatively short in duration. I think it sounds really cool, but want to make sure it isn't an anomaly. It takes place even with my foot off the accelerator.

The rev you hear - often called a throttle blip - is completely normal. The computer does it to bring engine revs up so that the gears mesh more smoothly when the lower gear is engaged. Takes the place of a "heel toe" in a traditional manual.

I am w/ robg, the smg is a sophisticated system . What the system is doing is an attempt to rev-match the lower gear for a smoother transition. Unfortunately, there are lots of self proclaimed ?enthusiast? that swears nothing but manual tranny find this ?rev-match? and ?heel-to-toe? as news. By the same token, I think the smg is not being fully appreciated by the 545 buyers because most lack the understanding of performance driving.

Enjoy the smg, it is no doubt the best 545 tranny available

Cheers,

beewang

It just does heel to toe? no double clutch? What about downshifting twice like from 5 to 3? or even 6 to 3? Cruising along the highway then Ooooooooooo a E500 ahead!

Glad to hear that it is not just me who takes special delight in "playing" with the E500

Mario takes care of all of that for you. Down shift two gears or whatever, if it won't over rev your engine, Mario will help you overtake that E500.

If I have understood BMW's material right SMG also "lighten" clutch a little while giving more revs to help gear change.

Actually giving more revs does not make sense otherwise.
