It would have been interesting to hear the debate by the BMW engineers as to how they finally worked out which way the switch should be.

Maybe it came down to a coin toss...
can one adjust HOW deep the mirror dips? its nearly angeled at the ground - not too useful when backing up, as you can't see a damned thing behind you. rather unsafe, as you can ONLY see the ground.

out of many cars with dipping mirrors, this one dips the lowest.

I agree that you should be able to program where the mirror ends up after dipping. M-B lets you do it (at least on the S-class). On the M-B, you can program the exact position of the mirror too. For example, you can program it to dip down and then out if you want...

In the M3 there is a setting in the car control memory that the dealer needs to set. Once they set that, the user can choose how far the mirror goes when it is in parallel parking mode. So, if it can be done in the M3, I'm sure it can be done in the e60.

I wouldn't be so sure. What you are saying makes logical sense and also makes sense in a world outside the world of BMW...

Well, certainly worth looking into if its an issue for the original poster. btw, I'm driving my fourth BMW and taking euro delivery on my fifth next month.

Isn't the rearview mirror the main tool for that?

it is - but you can only see whats in upper body height (adult sized) outside behind - you sure wont see a kid, or a post, or a big rock like someone else backed into the other day on this forum.
PDC is very useful, BUT only for objects that are:
1. Large
2. HIGH off the ground - try to have a HIGH sitting rock show up on it, or a bicycle laying around, or a shopping bag/soccerball or a HIGH CURB (5"-15" tall)
3. NOT off to the side. yes there is a side sensor, but it does not catch the area near the corner by the rear wheel well/fender - which if parking close to a parking post/street post might damage your fender.

alot of times i just adjust the mirror how i need it when backing in/up, then just hold the seat memory down to return to "driving" position.
