This is very strange! On my car the redline is ALWAYS 4750rpm, even when the engine is cold! The dashed area starts at 4250rpm.
I have never tried where the electronics cut out the engine though.
My rev counter scale looks exactly as in the picture in the first post
mine too Mr. Pilot but I start the engine and we need no more than 500m to move and then you can let it go, but I do not floor m car when I start as I am in the crowded city. Once out of the first few lights and we have 3 lanes, you can floor it. But I never watched these instruments, I drove my car-just teasing.

THX for info mates

These little graduated marks used to move on my 2004 530d as the engine warmed up.

On my 335d they don't change at all. I don't know if that's becasue this feature is exclusive to the E6x and not implemented on E9x models, or whether BMW phased out this feature on later cars (perhaps to save cost?).

I was a little upset that I have no way at all to see if the engine is warmed up. 335i's get an oil temperature gauge, I've got the stupid mpg-o-meter... bah.

red-max:

I agree with you, and I think you are on to something. Maybe they just deleted this feature on the 3-series??

Check out what this guy from **** replied, on another forum:

" All 5 and 6 series BMWs do have this nice feature. When these cars were launched, it was intended as a substitute for the coolant temp. gauge - a very elegant solution to me!

Unfortunately it was cancelled on the E9x - for whatever reason (cost?).
I bought a used E90 instrument cluster on ebay and took it apart - and voila! - everything there to fit the mechanism for the rotating scale, even the conductors for the stepper motor, which should move the scale, are printed on the circuit board.
So initially it must have been planned on the E9x and was cancelled later on.
Therefor no stepper motor and only a fixed disc-scale in production clusters.
It is the only thing I hate about my 330i - all time I am driving, I see a feature which was supposed to work and does not!

THANKS BMW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Side note: On the ALPINA D3 the scale is working. I e-mailed to ALPINA and the answer was: The D3 clusters are custom made by SIEMENS VDO for ALPINA to provide this feature. They said it will also be there on the coming ALPINA B3 E9x. "

Why did BMW delete this feature on the E90 / 91?????

Then comes next question: -why is the rev limit ( redline ) lower on a E90/91 3.0D engine ( my car ) than on E60 3.0D engine????

Answer to topic: Yes there is a limiter just like in a petrol and that's where the red zone starts. In our case from 5000rpms. The car will rev past those lines regardless if it's warmed up or not. As the engine warms up the lines drop closer to the rev limit. Those lines act just as a warning, and the remaining ones when fully warmed remain there just to warn you that you are soon reaching the rev limit. Of course i havn't redlined my engine when cold aka lines around 4000rpms, i redlined it just once when they were only 2 more left than the usual 4 (or so) that remain.

If it's a ZONE where is the LIMIT?

If it's at the beginning of the zone why do we need a zone?

The limit is around 5000rpm+, steptronics are programmed to shift at the limit aka exactly at 5000rpm but in a manual i bet the rev neddle would "bounce" around the limit in the red zone because of the fuel cut-off. In other word i bet in a manual you can get it IN the zone and not exactly only at the begining of it.
