I must have asked BMWNA, BMWAG, my SA and several dealers that question a hundred times before making my buying decision on my 6er. The answer was always a resounding no from BMW. It did not become available until MY2005, week 49 of CY2004. Even though my dealers allotment for my 6er came up half a dozen times, I put off my order until November just to get HUD. My reasons were because of my eye sight. I wear tri-focals and have a difficult time focusing on some areas in the cabin, quickly. In test driving a 530i with HUD I was thrilled with the presentation and my ability to get "some" key information without having to take my eyes off the road. I wish it included the gear you were in as well, but I'll have to wait for my M6 HUD for that to happen

It depends also on the options you allready have. You should have the regulated airco instead of the "simple" airco.(But maybe in the US all cars have the regulated airco).
Normally when you order the HUD you have to order the regulated airco as well. (ate least here in holland) It has something to do with the wiring in the car. My dealer told me there are 2 types of "cable trees" in the car.

Welcome to the forum Hullie!
I recommend you to specify your country in your signature like most of us do.
It is easier to respond to your questions if any in the future.

Welcome aboard, hullie !

That's correct.

New dashboard, new windshield, new wiring harness and advanced AC if not allready installed, labour...
If you know how much the wiring harness costs, you know that the answer to the question isa clear: NO WAY! It's easier to sell your car and buy a new one, it's cheaper this way.

It would be very difficult and very very expensive. Silly to do it.

It would be easier to weld an LCD screen on a stand to the front bumper and then mount a video camera near the driver's seat headrest so it could be aimed at the dash and send the images to the LCD outside. This way, you could have the gear indicators in the "HUD" as well...
