Could anyone tell me what would be a reasonable charge for retrofitting an auto dimming rearview mirror. The accessories brochure quotes ?250/- for the part. The BMW dealer claims it involves 4 hours labour (80x4 + VAT) totals to nearly ?650/- which I feel is slightly exorbidant charging.
Is there a PDF file explaining the retrofit procedure with a recommended duration of labour?

Please help

No it's not, only recently!

I nearly bought a mirror off ebay, but in the end I got light tints all round and 15% on the rear, works the same as the auto tint mirror, keeps the cool, keeps prying eyes out at night and looks better.

Total cost ?300.

I can't see why it would take any longer than 15 minutes. You may have to splice into the 12v from the harness already there, but buy the adapter for a mirror with alarm and whatever else you have like garage door opener and it will be dead easy.

BMW say that they need to find 12v down by the footwell, but that is unecessary and takes hours, the voltage is there already in the cable that goes to the mirror.

I heard you will need a new winscreen to do that as the incoorporated bracket for the rearview mirror is different for the autodim. (I can not confirm this, it is just what I heard).

If you want to save some serious money you can buy the part, and claim the fitting on your windscreen insurance (say it is cracked). Normally ?50 and does not affect your no claim bonus.

I am pretty sure the autodim mirror just uses a 12 volt connection, you can pull that from the headlinin lights.

If rhedoc is in the UK I guess he has the regular mirror but with the clown nose, if this is the case than all that is needed is the auto dipping mirror and the harness for it.

15 minute job.
