Simply put...if you don't get Michelins...you could have gotten a smoother/quieter/longer lasting tire. They're more expensive, but they're worth it...especially on a BMW.

My local tyre fitter had no issue in swapping the Dunlop SP01 RFTs for Goodyear non-RFTs.

If you want to change your RFT with normal once do not go to Costco (UK). I ordered "normal" Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres to replace my RFT, but when I went to get them fitted they refused to do so. The manager explained that they would not fit normal tyres on my car, because the car suspension is designed for RFT, and if they change them may be sued by my insurance company. They offer to sell me the tyres, but refused to fit them, unless I can give them ?approval? letter from BMW or my insurance company. BMW refused to send me such letter. I have spent half day on the phone with my insurance company (More than), eventually they sent me a letter, which was useless?.:-(

Some E60's come with regular tires, COSTCO is a bunch of morons...

Having just changed to non rf and thouroughly enjoying the much smmother ride, a thought did occur to me. We all know the rf tyres have very hard side walls and I wonder if the should be any change in tyre pressure for non rfs. I will confess, mine have only been on a few weeks and I've been too idle to check them. Senior management has badly kerbed near side so another two tyres have had to be fitted last week and in due course I'll have to get the wheels refurbed. What a pain.

Just a quick update. A month or so after getting rid of the RFTs and replacing them with Avon ZZ3, the difference is amazing. The ride is in a different league, road noise is completly reduced and it now rides and drive like a car in this class should. Grip in the wet is certainly improved, I have a 60mph tightening left on my way home which was always a white knuckle ride as the car was deflected by the bumpy surface and in the wet you had to slow down as turn in was really iffy. Now I just fly round without thinking about it.

It also coped this morning with a decent fall of snow, including an overtake that meant putting two wheels into some slush, not a flicker from the DTC or a tug on the wheel. So after 1,500 miles as you can tell I am very pleased and wont miss the RFTs. As an added bonus these tyres have a lip that protects the rims which has already beeen called into service as I misjudged a reverse park to get a last minute christmas present for the wife.

The only issues with replacing the tyres if you are thinking about it, is the fitter at your local tyre place will hate you as the RTFs are a real pain to get of the rim due to the sidewalls, especially when it is cold and finding a spare wheel kit is a pain. I am still looking, but have a can of tyre weld as back-up.
