I am planning on changing just the current tires to winter tires on my current 18 inch rims. I am planning on getting 19 M5 rims for the summer...Also, this way I keep the current runflats for when I turn in my lease.

SO, I got a quote for just the tires from my dealership and it came out to around $2500 CAD. I went to another tire shop and they quoted my $1500 CAD. Is there any reason why I shouldn't get the tires and get them installed from the tire shop? Does BMW do anything differently, or is there anything else that they install?

Thanks

No reason to take it to your dealer. If you can find the rim and tire, the tire shop does the exact same thing your dealer would.

It's not clear (maybe it is from the prices) whether the quotes are for both the wheels and the tyres.

If for both, do you have tyre pressure monitors and did the tyre shop's quote include those?

I for one went only for tires and i'm pretty much in the same position as you. I thought also about the RF tires as for the lease turn over, and maybe especially long journeys. 20" rims for summer and winter tires on my 18" ones. Just be sure to get a narrower tire with a slightly bigger tire profile. 225/45 R18 would be perfect even though the tire size is pretty rare and weird.

I was in the same situation as you and did the following:
I purchased a set of 19" M5 M166s for summer and had winter tyres mounted on my 18" M135 rims that came with the company lease car. I will simply return the car with 1 set of rims (the M135s) and two sets of tyres (the original summer tyres and the winter tyres). Was all okayed from BMW and the Leasing company. I did however have the tyres supplied and mounted by BMW, because this is how our leasing is set up, oh - and because they collected the car from my work place

I am running 245/40/18s Dunlop SP Winter Sport, which are non-RFT. These are meant to be very good for dry/wet motorway cruising and average for snow - which reflects my typical driving requirements. Very pleased with them until now.

Cheers

I was in the same situation.....

I bought a set of 19" 172M as my summer wheels and had Michelin Pilot Alpin2 tires mounted on the 18" 135M that came with the car as my winter wheels.

When I got the original winter tire quote from the dealership they were way too high!

I shopped around and got quoted a much lower price from a wheel and tire shop in Toronto.......I simply went back to my BMW dealership and asked if they would match the lowest price I was quoted since I would rather do business with them......and they did !!!!!

The only thing they do that makes them more expensive is have higher profit margins than everyone else!!!!! It's BMW !!!!!
