Was looking at the rear door panel storage areas and noticed the ash tray enclosures take up about 1/3 of the usable door bin space...anyone think to remove these and would it be finished underneath? I removed the actual ash tray and it did look like the door panel bin was finished underneath...
Since no one will be smoking in my car, I'd just as soon loose the rear trays and increase the storage space Probably have to remove the rear door panel then unsrew the encloser from the bottom side?

It seems to be held by screws (part 12) in the diagram http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mo...hg=51&fg=50

I've just looked at the TIS for you and there definately is a screw holding the tray in place. Its going to be a lot of work to get to that screw.

The diagram is from a pre-LCI model. I think the design is changed for the LCI.

Bruce, your are correct. I went out with the diagram and it wasn't close enough/detailed enough for me to start pulling the door panel apart. I removed a couple of door trim screws and stopped there. Not clear if the door handle bucket snaps out or not and if the door panel is fastened with the plastic "push" fasteners or with hooks that lift up and out. I'll try and find a better picture of the LCI before I attempt to remove...don't want to break anything. I did verify though that the area below/behind the ash tray enclosure is finished. Silly to waste all that storage room for something that's never going to be used!

Bruce, great photo of the door panel build...can you also post one showing how to remove the rear door panel? That would be very helpful

I'm sorry my TIS version doesn't have the LCI cars on it.
