Hi, I find the idrive is a successful design concept for the following reasons:

1. It is cool and encapsulates the modernity and sophistication of the car
2. It is practical and easy to use
3. It allows many useful features to be loaded on the car without overcrowding the dashboard
4. My children like to play with it

absolutely not .. i am asessing how successful a design is ...

your feedback can be as short as possible , i just need to know people's opinions because it's the consumers in the end that have the final say in the sucess of a design

To be honest, I think that touch screen's offer some real benfit over iDrive. Sometimes iDrive is handy (can keep arm in one place), but at times, I'd just like to be able to point to the screen.

Overall, I find it useful and quite easy to use. (5 series iDrive)

pros
You don't have to strech out to reach some button from the radio, for example.
Gives you access to o lot of information and vehicule settings.

cons
Since is software driven it has a few bugs.

Basically I found that the IDrive is a gadget to entice buyers. Bmw tried to make it differnt from other car makers by putting most of the controls in it. However, it is software driven and it will have bugs. I took delivery of my car with a dead pixel on the screen. I went back to change the screen and the adviser told me it cost SGD5000. It is so expensive. I thought it is just another third party TFT screen. Worst still, it took them 1.5 days to fix. Because they have to update the software. Updating of software took three quater to a day to complete. You see...if everything works fine, it is great. But when it is down, you will be quite pissed off. Overall, i think nothing it is a novelty idea. After awhile, novelty fades off, you may not even want to hands on unless you need to tune the FM or CD. The car is great, great handling and responsiveness is superb. I buy the car because of its performance and handling...not idrive.

Plus points

looks cool to younger generation
lots more settings to play with, i.e. heated seats can vary back and bottom temperature ratio.
mobile phone integration is the best around combined with bluetooth
Car can get upgraded at a later date with latest functions.

minus points
previously one button functions now take several steps, to change a CD in multichanger it's 5 steps I think and I need to look at the screen to check, previously was a 1 button press without looking.
It's new and bugged
It's badly designed if it takes most of a day to update !!!
It needs it's own brightness control.
Makes the rest of the centre dash look really bare.

Overall Idrive is mostly useless in a basic spec car, it has maybe 1 or 2 vent controls and manages radio. On cars with nav and/or phone, upgraded air con etc it gets much better.
