I have read somewhere that at redline life of the engine is about 20 hours. So 1 minute won't do much damage, but hours will.
Doesn't the rev limiter cut in?

LOL no kidding.. As a matter a fact I was just telling VT how i blew out this STi the other night.. I redlined through first and second before letting off the gas.

I finally beat one of those damn things
I've been discussing with some people about taking first gear to redline. It would appear that there is a noticeable decrease in power @6500 rpm from 1st to 2nd. So, to stay in the power band shift somewhere between 6000 - 6400 rpm. I've been doing some tests to validate this.

There is no reason for BMW to design engine that can run at the redline for days since sobody really does it. Life of engines in fighter jets and race cars is also very short.
I think I understand what you're saying. Keeping the engine near redline for long durations at a time will in effect lessen the lifespan of the engine. The short bursts of approaching redline adds up after awhile. Hmm... Maybe I shouldn't be taking my car to 6500 rpm so frequently.

I always thought the car was fitted with a redline limiter. So as not to damage the engine.

Limiter prevents immediate damage. Above certain rpm engine may break immediately since there may be parts that are simply not designed to provide enough oil pressure, withstand certain temperatures or be able to rotate at very high speeds without breaking apart. Limiter guarantees that engine won't break right away. But I am sure it does not guarantee that lifetime of the engine at 7000 rpm is the same as at 2000 rpm.

my 2005 545 died at a young age of 14 month and 15,500 miles.
I don't think that red-lining has any correlation with the problems of your last car.

I honestly hit redline on a daily basis and multiple times per day at that. I've even held the car directly at redline in 2nd and 3rd gear for a few minutes at a time. Similar to your vette story, I've driven the car at or near redline, but for at least 4-5 hours and over 400 miles in one day. Currently I have over 40K+ miles and have had zero problems with the engine. I wasn't even that strict with the break-in guidelines.

Car manufactures send their engines off to labs for accelerated lifetime testing and to be tested at the maximum. A friend of mine works at one of these labs/companies and explained that the engine and interfacing compentents are then modified to handle it. BMW drivers are known for their "spirited" driving, so I would be very surprised if BMW had not designed and tested the cars to be able to handle be driven at least at the limits set in the factory (e.g. Rev Limiter and max speed limiter.)

This whole discussion is possible more relevant to the petrol engines, because there's little point taking your diesel all the way into the red, because the power curve starts dropping off a good 500-1000 before that.
