I just received a recall letter from BMW. I have a 2004 525i, and they are telling me that my Telematics Control Unit may malfunction. I assume to correct this problem they are going to replace the TCU, as they indicate it will take approx. one day for the repair. If they replace the TCU with a new one, does this mean I should be able to now play MP3's and that an ipod adapter will now work? <_<
Thanks for any info anyone can shed on this.

Hi MDT.......I had mine replaced on my 2005 525i, The recall on the TCU was because BMW felt that there could be a problem with BMW Assist, in that, if your auto was involved in a crash, the TCU could fail and it would not broadcast the airbag deployment to BMW~Assist. BTW, you will not be able to play MP3's on it. The replacement also enhanced the Bluetooth operation of the vehicle.
It takes all day because they have to reload all your software back into the car.
Good luck and enjoy your ride

Thanks for the quick reply Mr 5er. I'm curious as to what type of enhancements it makes to the bluetooth. Does it sound better or is the operation different?
I was planning on putting an ipod interface in. If I did it myself, maybe when they reload all the software they will turn it on without charging. I might get lucky.
When they reloaded your software, did they update it to the newest version?

Would it be possible for you to scan and post a copy of that recall letter? Omitting your personal information ofcourse. I wonder if BMW has finally bit the bullet and will replace all TCU's on earlier cars?

No problem. Here it is if I did the attachment right. Let me know if you get it ok.

MDT,
Are you still subscribed to BMW Assist? I'm wondering as to which models would be included in the recall. Perhaps only BMW Assist subscribers would have gotten the recall notice.
Rudy,
Have you any further information on this recall?

I think this might pertain to SI B84 16 06 which explains which vehicles are affected, gives the procedures for re-programming the TCU, and on top of it all, tells the BMW Centers to fill the gas tank and pay for valet service for picking up and returning the car to the owner.

Lomag,
No, I am not subscribed to BMW Assist. I bought this car as a CPO car, and have never had BMW assist. I am subscribed to BMW assist on my new BMW but not on this car. I just double checked my VIN# to make sure it wasn't the new car. The vin# on the letter is for the 2004 525i.
