What we really need is a way to reboot people when they are out of control.

Update:
It seems to make no difference what key position is used. I even restarted iDrive while driving with no issues!
I noticed that it actually seems to "restart" (soft reboot) rather than 'cold boot' when you use the 3-button trick. I only say this because I noticed my BMW phone (CPT-9000) did not re-read the phone directory from the phone into iDrive, it merely came back with the directory it had loaded from the last 'wake-up'. Hope this helps.

This is a bit OT (sorry), but today Lufthansa experienced something what reminds me on the current E60 software situation
:
The reason for the computer break down was...
yes...
a software update they were running the night before.

Check-in system at Lufthansa working again
Services returning to normal after disruption
23.09.04
Lufthansa's check-in systems are now operating normally again after the temporary computer fault earlier today which resulted in delays and cancellations on European routes. The check-in systems have been up and running since 12.30 hrs. Self-service check-in terminals and boarding pass printers will soon be functioning again. Lufthansa expects operations to return to normal in the course of the day.
Lufthansa regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers. Following the breakdown of the computer system, passengers had to be checked in manually. During the subsequent delays, Lufthansa looked after the needs of its passengers and provided snacks and refreshments.
Lufthansa is currently recording delays of up to two hours on some flights. On intra-European routes, 33 flights with about 3,000 booked passengers had to be cancelled. Long-haul flights were not affected by the cancellations. At no time was the safety or security of flight operations affected.

I don't understand nobody at the dealer told me this was possible before. It would help lots of customers with hanging I-Drives.. I think they don't even know this function is there. And I don't expect BMW putting it in the manual because that would look very stupid.. Imagine on the last page of the manual:
If you're I-Drive hangs (wich can happen occasionaly), please press the on/off button of the radio and the eject buttons of DVD and CD slot in your dashboard to reboot...

I was told by an IBM project egineer is the reason why Acura and Lexus Multimedia networks is so much more stable is because they use a Linux OS as opposed Windows like the germans.
It seems Microsoft pratically gave Windows OS for idrive and Command(licensing fee). Boy were BMW and Mecredes duped, Linux is shareware and therefore free for the asking...the joke is on us
