When I purchased by 530i, I thought I wouldn't need rear sun shades so I didn't add this option. Now our first baby is on the way next week and now I regret why I didn't get it.

I don't want to tint windows so does anyone know if BMW or other accessories company sell these rear and side sun shades? I need something that looks better than those ugly "Babies R Us" retractable sun shades on windows.

Thanks!

I seem to remember other posts/threads explaining that there isn't an easy retrofit for the side sunshades. Isn't there a manual sunshade standard in the car for the rear?

Also, make sure you've dealt with the rear airbags if you have them as an option. They're generally not a good thing when car seats are installed in the back.

The rear one may not be as hard to retrofit as the sides.

I was thinking about doing this, but rearside is not doable unless new rear door panels are replaced which is very expensive.
I'm not sure if coding is needed.

You have to take it to your dealer to get them de-activated. BMW keep a record of which cars have them de-activated. You will then need to take it back again to get them re-activated.

I'm not sure of the measurements now, but I checked at the time and both my rear child car seats are far enough away from the airbags, so I didn't bother deactivating mine. I think it is more of a safety thing, it is possible that the childs head could end up resting on the door sill, which would obviously be very dangerous if the airbag fired. (When your child is older buy a car-seat with side head supports to prevent their head lolling to one side when asleep).

It is reported in tests that the safest place for a child to be is in the centre rear seat-belt, in this case the airbags are not an issue.

I think I'll have to buy a manual rear blind for my car soon too. They cost about ?70 from BMW parts and can be fitted yourself.

The side windows are a bit trickier, but our youngest has a sunshade on his car seat anyway. The trouble is with the stick on (babyrus) ones is that you can forget they are there and lower the window with it stuck on! As I found out to my cost when my wife did this in our previous car and I spent the day trying to get suckers off a window stuck down inside the door!

It's possible to buy fitted window 'socks' which fit over the door tops (inside and out), our neighbour has a set and they look OK. Or you can go for a gentle tinting on the rear sides (at risk of looking like a drug dealer! )

I went to a regular auto parts store and found plain grey shades that have the suction cups. I think they were $5.00.

And Congratulations! There is nothing better!

I've got the side and rear shades and two kids under 3, I don't find them that effective, the sun still shines through the side ones to a certain extent and the rear is really not required as the kids are now are facing the opposite direction....however at night putting all the blinds up makes the back really cosy and they are out like a light !

I got the shades for my daughter, but I hope she doesn't tear them up when she grows older and can reach them.
