True - BMW assembles their cars in various countries but the quality is always the same. They recently started assembling the 3 and the 5 series in India for example - and export these to various parts of Asia.

All Asian mercedes are assembled in a Chinese MBz facility. They are known to have much Poorer quality compared to their german counterparts. This may be true for BMW.... But has not been confirmed.

Here's my take on what the OP is talking about...

I don't think he's talking about an E60 being "built" in Japan, he's talking about Japanese spec cars that are built in Germany on the same assembly line as cars for many other countries. It is true, however, that the Japanese spec cars have some different things (at least technology wise) to help them sell cars to that target market. In addition to what BLooD was talking about, I remember a while ago seeing a reference to some options specific to the Japanese market (an MD drive comes to mind but I can't remember for sure.)

As far as build quality is concerned, I don't think they're building them any better for export to Japan, they're just building them differently and the same can be said for pretty much every country.

Hey DRANGED,

with all respect, why do you display another well respected member as your avatar?
I have never seen him showing pics of himself... Is he cool with it?
