A friend of mine who has an e46 (old 3 series) recently took apart his dash. He told me that the "wood" was actually metal painted to make look like wood. This seemed kinda like a shock to me--I thought that at least we had a thin layer of veneer!! Is our e90's wood fake or real?

I thought the wood look alike trims were plastics.

I'm pretty sure that the e46 trims are real wood veneers cunningly disguised as plastic. Did your mate have aluminium trim?

No, "real" wood trim--surprisingly looks a lot like the wood in my 545i. It makes me wonder that the wood is nothing but a cheap imitation.

Well I can tell you that the wood around my cubbyhole is real wood. I have a 2004 that came w/ the cheap plastic trim and I ordered the wood replacement when it was introduced on the MY05's. The part came in and I carried it in my car for several weeks before I could leave the car to have it installed. It is wood. Not sure why BMW would make that part from real wood and the rest imitation.

Keep in mind that the wood trim pieces are supposed to have a metal back to help prevent the "real" wood from splintering in the event of a car accident. That was what was explained to me by MBZ on my old W210 E-Class. I am sure it is the same for BMW.

I always thought it was plastic wiht a thin thin layer of wood on top to make it look like wood... I think OLD E34s had real wood.

From the subject line, I thought we were going to play this game again:
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=6813

edit I now realize that the link to the game is dead. Oh well, there are plenty of other tests out there, just google "real or fake test" (without the quotes) and press the "I'm feeling lucky" button and you'll get the idea...
