This coming week I have to take delivery of a new 528 or a new 535. I need help considering the pros and cons of each engine platform.
5. Long term maintenance costs - is the 535 a money pit?

Regarding 528 or 535, Since you're coming from a pretty nimble 330, I don't know if you'll be happy with 528. It will feel sluggish steering and lack of power compared to the 330. Honestly, if $$$ is an issue and you are looking at moving to 5r in 2010, I would go for new 335. JM2cents.

All the points you mention are valid practical things to consider when purchasing a nice Japanese automobile.
For me at least, none of those things factored into my decision, because when I drove the 535i it put a big smile on my face.
The 528i is nice but it doesn't respond to your right foot in nearly the same fashion as the 535i.
You really have to drive them both. If you are not immediately convinced the 535i is the way to go, then go for the 528i. Or get a Lexus.

The above poster raises a good question - would a 335 be a better buy now and then in a couple more years go for an F10? What do all of you new 535 owners think knowing that your car may/will look dated in just 2 years time?

It certainly does appear that we have a few 528 owners who wish they had coughed up the extra 4 to 5K and gotten the 535. Nary a 535 owner wishes he had gotten the 528. We'll see when they get to be 5 years old and maintenance is on their tab and gas hits $6 a gallon....

not concerned at all. My 535i is on lease, it will be ending right around the release of th F10. I will hopefully get into another e60 for a shorter lease to allow the initial F10 bugs to get worked out...
