Reading, resetting own codes and such things

I read that quite a few of you chaps have equipment to read codes and what not.....I'm guessing via some diagnostic port on the e60. Now my question is, would you recommend this for someone who is planning on keeping an old e60 for a while? Does it save you cash in the long run or is it more of a hobby thing.
I'm quite technical and I'll be doing most standard services myself on the car so I'm not adverse to such things, just wondering if on the e60 if it is a good thing to have.
Also what are the options out there for a 2003 530 e60? What kit/software do I need
cheers and thanks for any info

I use an OBD2 to USB cable and INPA and DIS softwares for diagnostics and doing little things sometimes. I recommend them for anyone who oughts to keep his E60 for any longer. They come handy in time
