Reading the OFFSET from the RIM/WHEEL

Ok guys, I tried searching a lot, did not find this info.
Is the offset of our BMW wheels on the actual rim surface? I did not find anything, looking in the back of course.
Found the Manufacturer and a lot of other numbers, so I suppose the offset is encoded somehow?

In this case the wheel is an 18" with offset = 55

My Ride: 2007 530i. Purchased 6/28/07. Titanium Silver Metallic, Black Dakota Leather, Dark Poplar Trim, Steptronic, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, Bluetooth, Adaptive Control Xenons. 10/30/07 Added OEM 124s with 245/40/18 & 275/35/18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. ET = Offset. It comes from the German "Einpresstiefe."

So that would be basically a really good way to find out.
I gather from this that the ET(offset) is not actually on the rim itself?? I tried to find it, couldn't.
Kind of odd really for a company known for details
